Rice Cake or Nian Gao (In Chinese) is a traditional food for Chinese New Year.
“ Nian Gao” in Chinese word mean high or tall , that mean eating Nian Gao has the symbolism of rising abundance, prosperous or higher achievement for coming year.
In old day, women make rice cake at home and give as a gift for relative or friends. Nowadays not many people know how to make it or no time and no place to make it.
The ingredients of rice cake are glutinous rice flour, sugar, water, banana leaf and some round tin. Rice cake will take about 10-12 hours to steam over high heat until the rice cake has a nice brown colour. Now some people improve the recipe so it is does not need to steam for so long.
The rice cake can eat while it is warm, it taste sweet and sticky. Some people like to eat with coconut shred or deep fried with sweet potato and yam.
