The Penang Ferry service is the oldest ferry service in Malaysia. The ferry service began operations in year 1920 linking Georgetown on Penang Island and Butterworth on the mainland.
Now it has 8 ferries ply between Seberang Perai mainland and Penang Island. The ferries are named Pulau Pinang, Pulau Payar, Pulau Angsa, Pulau Kapas, Pulau Rimau, Pulau Undan, Pulau Rawa and Pulau Talng-Talang.
The lower deck of ferry is designed for vehicles and upper deck for pedestrian passengers or for both.
Each ferry journey takes about 20 minutes. The first ferry departure from Penang Island at 5.30am with the last at 1am. However the first ferry departure from Butterworth at 6am, with the last at 12.30am.
The ferry only charge when you departure from Butterworth, for pedestrian is RM1.20, for car is RM7.70.
